Background and motivation
Location based services are one of the rapid growing application areas for the mobile devices. In recent years all the big players have invested in developing technology and business capability in this area, including, Nokia, Google, Apple, Samsung, etc. Typically the location sensing is based on GPS satellites, which offers approxinmately meters of accuracy in outdoor only. Thus, indoors will require separate solution and technology probably needs to offer higher accuracy than meters. There are number of existing solutions in the markets, typically based on existing radios, for example WiFi networks.
NRC Helsinki run a trial of indoor positioning in Kamppi, Helsinki (http://betalabs.nokia.com/betas/view/nokia-kamppi-trial).

The trial proved the technology capability, but the actual business cases and ecosystem views should be explored further. The Nokia system will require an initial investement for the technology setup, which depends on the size of the indoor area. The investement is not huge, but it significant enough to be taken account in the business evaluations.

Project goal
Explore the required ecosystem in two or more business cases for indoor locations (for example shopping malls, sport arenas, trader shows, etc). Creativity in location selection is part of the whole outcome. Analyze the business and selected use cases, focus on market size, opportunity and competition (e.g. Google favourite places, Ekahau, etc...).
