Background and Motivation
New service offerings such as Comes with Music have enabled users to store a huge selection music on their mobile devices. Selecting and finding a desired item is getting more difficult when the user needs to browse through long lists of items.
The conventional access to music catalog using indexed in hierarchic lists based on the name of the artist, album, composer and genre should be replaced by more intuitive search methods.
Project Goal
Design a media player user interface using touch screen, available sensors, 3D graphics and 3D audio rendering. Let the user navigate in audio visual 3D space filled with music
Development tools, environments and standards
QT environment
Gstreamer media framework
Linux/Maemo
Time period
The project constitutes full-time work for the project team between 24.5 - 31.8.2010.
Interaction between stakeholder and project team
The work will mainly be done at the Demola 'office' in Tampere, Finlayson. There will be regular meetings with the company partner and the team members. There will also be other forms of communication and guidance available to the team. The team will report the work by writing a team blog on the Demola website.
Support (supervision & financial)
Demola staff will supervise the reports and by the end of each month the team will also write a one page summary of the reported project actions, methods used, implemented software, and results.
How to apply for Innosummer
It's possible to apply by April 11th. Further information on www.demola.fi/innosummer2010

This Is the End of the Music Space - For Now
The project is over. We have designed a great music player with 3D graphics and 3D audio rendering, and call it the Music Space. As with most projects here, we also had to hurry up a bit at the end to make everything to work out. We think it worked out fine.

Luoto 3D Coming Through
Luoto, as we called our concept music player a while back, is receiving a graphical design treatment. Once its finished it replaces the temporary design done by our head UI programmer.
Player That Plays Music
Our player finally works! At least it plays couple of different audio formats while the visualisation (UI) is being implemented as we speak. A working version ought to be ready this upcoming week - then we can have some fun with it.
Visualisation Is Here - Soon
Music Space came up with an initial UI plan for the programmers to implement. We've refined the ideas we've had and hopefully they turn out to be just swell. We just wish we could share them here!
Further Development
As said on our previous Music Space blog entry, we managed to sort out the concept for the project. This week the UI designer has made some initial designs and interactions for the concept. Upon the first coarse implementations of it, we noticed that what looks good on a piece of drawing paper doesn't necessarily look that good on a small touch screen.
Music Space Concept Is Here - Photo-warning
Demola InnoSummer community is great. After our OpenInnoWednesday get-together, project Music Space has found its way - its concept. Now we have a pretty clear idea what to design and we're proceeding with it during our three-day sprint, which is relatively short. We have already managed to do an initial design and noticed some aspect of our awesome design that need to be fixed.
No More Documentation
GStreamer documentation has been finally more than skimmed through. Since that major milestone we've designed the first UI for our application. It's pretty simple but it serves us well at the moment because it was our first sprint where we implemented something.
Same ol' this week
Project Music Space has had relatively unchanged agenda compared to last week. We're still going through the GStreamer documentation while testing how OpenGL graphics and GStreamer work together on Qt environment. We also have a nice demo to play around, which will serve us as a great prototype.
Hopefully next week we can get our hands dirty and start a new sprint.
Heading for better Music Space
This week - or actually last week because this blog posting is coming in late, oops - we had one of our regular meetings with NRC and it mainly consisted of advice on how to sort out some technical problems we've been facing. Nothing too serious though and we're back on the tracks from previous week: getting familiar with GStreamer.
Implementing Ideas - How the 3D Cube Was Born
Week 3 with the Music Space project has partly followed the footsteps of the first two weeks. Our Master Programmers have been getting used to working with Qt and GStreamer, and learning all the relevant basics there is to them.
3D Music Space Kick Off
The first two weeks have gone pretty good, since we are in the phase of learning new things. The Tampere Innovation Experience has given us a good introduction of the latest developments in the digital society.
