Innosummer project 3: A new, digital dimension to Guided Tours for tourists
You are travelling in a new town somewhere in Europe. You are walking down the street, and suddenly you notice an interesting, old building and a bar on the corner. You would like to know what building it is, and why it is offset diagonally, and whether the bar would serve a kind of lunch that would match your current mood. You connect your mobile to a new kind of city guide service. Would you like to hear the history of that building along with other stories about the neighbourhood? How about the stories other travellers have told about the food, service, and atmosphere of the bar? If you don't like the tone and voice of the tourist guide, you are free to change the guide.
Project goals
-
Create a digital Guided Tour concept for a mobile device.
-
Create innovative new ideas on story telling in Mixed Reality.
-
A functional demo of some of the possible contents for a Guided Tour.

Time period
The project constitutes full-time work for the project team between 18.5. - 31.8.2009.

The work will mainly be done at the Demola 'office' in Tampere, Finlayson. There will be regular weekly meetings with the company partner and the team members. There will also be other forms of communication and guidance available to the team. The team will report the work by writing a team blog on the Demola web service.
Support (supervision & financial)
Demola staff will supervise the reports and by the end of each month the team will also write a one page summary of the reported project actions, methods used, and results.

The end is near

The project is slowly coming to an end and we already see some light at the end of the tunnel. We just don't know if the light is the sun or a train. I'd put my money on the sun bet.
Local Buddy goes magnetic
This week Local Buddy moved to another level since we finally got a hold of a Nokia N97 which has a magnetometer built inside. This really increased the wow-factor of our demo and the whole team went bananas.

It's friday already?!
During these last weeks team Local Buddy has been so busy that we haven't even got time to write this wonderful blog of ours. We still have lots of things to be done and only little time.

Local Buddy - the end of july
It´s really hard to come up with an interesting blog entry every week about our Local Buddy project because everything´s going just smoothly. During a normal week we have 1-3 meetings in one of the meeting rooms and then we sit around our weirdly shaped work station and argue about little details concerning the project. The rest of the time we just work.

Midsummer week
Tuesdays Nokia lab day went well. Timo P. took care of the pitching like professional and convinced the professors with our brilliant ideas. It´s nice that we have good info material of our project - powerpoint, brouchure, cool pictures and even a small demo for the 5800. That is what makes this project so concrete and real. We can truly see the results of our months work

Local Buddy: 4th week
First week with the new concept idea.
It felt like we had reached the next level; We had upgraded our good ideas and discarded the bad ones. The major change to the earlier concept is "the radar view" which replaces the nowadays popular map. We want to give user the freedom to enjoy its surroundings and not to stare at the map all the time.

Second week - Innosummer 3
It´s funny to think that our project started just two weeks ago, because it feels that we´ve been doing this at least a month or so. We have gone a long way in just 14 days!

Innosummer project 3 - First week!
Our project started on monday. The Team (Timo x2, Olli, me, Hanne and Joel) sat down and began brainstorming about A new, digital dimension to Guided Tours for tourists. Many cool ideas came up, but we were worried about them being too "lame". We wanted to get more crazy ideas and innovative thinking - so we went out to Suvilaiva to get more inspiration.
